World Cup Group E table, standings 2022: Updated results and fixtures for Spain, Germany, Japan and Costa Rica

It was Japan and Spain advancing from Group E in one of the wildest group finishes of this World Cup.

On the final day we saw different teams occupying the top two places as the scores changed from the matches which were happening simultaneously: Spain-Germany, Japan-Costa Rica, and ultimately Japan-Spain.

Japan defeated both European powers to deserve their spot atop the Group E table. Their only blemish was a defeat to Costa Rica.

Spain were saved by their massive 7-0 victory over Costa Rica in the opening match. It was that goal difference that made the difference on the final day. They finished level on points with Germany, but the first tiebreaker was goal difference, and Spain edged out their European rivals (+6 to +1).

Do 3rd place teams advance at World Cup 2022?

Before the World Cup format expanded to include 32 teams, the best third-place sides did often make it through. But that’s not the case in 2022.

Only the top two teams from each group advance to the knockout round. If teams are tied on points, then the tiebreakers are used to determine which team occupies each position.

In the Round of 16, group winners are paired with a runner-up from a different group. The bracket is predetermined and the slots fill up just as teams confirm their placement within each group.
