Sir Elton John, 76, reveals how he got in shape for the final leg of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour

Sir Elton John has revealed how he got in shape for the final leg of his farewell tour by walking six miles a week in his swimming pool.

The 76-year-old singer began his final UK leg of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in Liverpool last week.

It marks Sir Elton’s last live concerts, with just under 50 shows left on the tour to play, including in Ireland this week.

The tour was hit by severe delays several times since it was announced by Sir Elton five years ago.

Sir Elton suffered a pneumonia health scare and had to undergo a hip replacement as well as being delayed by the pandemic.

But he has now revealed he took advantage of lockdown to build up a new fitness routine.

Sir Elton said: ‘I get up, have breakfast and go for a walk in the pool. At my age that is the best thing I can do. I walk sideways and do about six miles a week.’

His final last UK appearance will be at Glastonbury in June before his final date the following month in Sweden.

It comes after Sir Elton took to Instagram on Saturday to show his fans how he celebrated turning 76.

The Don’t Go Breaking My Heart hit maker spent the big day with his husband David Furnish, 60, and their two children Zachary Furnish-John, 13 and Elijah Furnish-John, 10.

Posting some snaps to his 4.4 million followers, he showed off some huge pink and gold balloons, plus a sweet present of 100 oak trees.

Whilst the trees were not fully grown, they were sprigs from acorns from an old tree that had been part of Sir Elton’s driveway for years.

Describing the day as ‘magical’ and a ‘real celebration’ it was the tasty cake that stole the show.

Decorated in fondant icing, it saw Elton as an edible, piano-playing version of himself, wearing a pair of his trademark specs.

Lying across the top of the piano was a fondant icing David, staring into Elton’s eyes whilst their children were seen lying down, seemingly listening to the songs being played in the imaginary scene.

Elton captioned the pictures: ‘I absolutely loved my birthday! A magical day with @davidfurnish and our beautiful sons.

‘From the most spectacular cake – to the gift of 100 oak trees grown from acorns off the old tree that’s been gracing my driveway for centuries, it was a real celebration.

‘Thank-you from the bottom of my heart to all the friends and fans who sent flowers and beautiful messages.’

The music legend then reposted a string of stories from famous faces congratulating him on the milestone.

They included Taron Egerton, who famously played him in the biopic Rocketman, comedian David Walliams, actor Russell Tovey and makeup mastermind Charlotte Tilbury, among others.

Sir Elton who is currently on tour with his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour has a music career that spans more than five decades.

He has sold more than 300 million records worldwide and in 1998 was knighted for services to music and charity.

Explaining why the legendary singer wants to take his final bow from touring, husband David told Billboard:
