Britney Spears’ highly-anticipated memoir The Woman in Me has taken the literary world by storm. The title sold a staggering 1.1 million copies in its first week after its release on October 24. While the book’s rapid ascent to bestseller status was expected from the moment it was announced, the sheer scale of its success is undeniable.

Debuting at the top of multiple New York Times NYT bestseller lists—including the Combined Print & E-Book Nonfiction and Hardcover Nonfiction—Spears’ memoir has not only captivated the public but also cemented its place in the literary record books. The phenomenal sales figures encompass a wide range of formats, including pre-orders, print sales, e-books, and audiobooks, which all contributed to its opening week sum.

Within the pages of The Woman in Me, Spears delivers a compelling account of her meteoric rise to global fame and the ongoing challenges she has faced throughout her decades in the spotlight. She candidly discusses the conservatorship that had, for many years, granted her father significant control over her life, and which millions of fans fought until the court system reviewed it and ultimately ended it.

The book was promoted largely with excerpts, as Spears didn’t do any signings or interviews to push the title. Instead, the media did most of the work, extensively covering a handful of tidbits that were shared from The Woman in Me before it arrived. Most notable among these excerpts was the admission that Spears had an abortion when she was just a teenager. She had become pregnant with her then-boyfriend, Justin Timberlake, who reportedly convinced the singer to terminate her pregnancy.

While the 1.1 million copies sold within the first week is indeed an impressive feat, it falls just short of breaking the record for the bestselling celebrity memoir in a single week. According to AP, that accolade remains with Prince Harry’s memoir, Spare. Released in January, that book sold 1.6 million copies in the U.S. during its initial week of availability.

The audio edition of The Woman in Me proved to be a critical component of the book’s popularity, with Oscar-nominated actor Michelle Williams delivering a captivating reading—including impersonations of some people mentioned in the story, including Timberlake. Spears herself provided an introduction to the audiobook but did not narrate the entire work, a decision that appears to have resonated positively with listeners.

Spears has already generated more anticipation by announcing a second memoir is in the works. However, specific details regarding its release date and content remain undisclosed.

The success of The Woman in Me not only reflects the enduring fascination with Spears’ life, even after neatly a quarter-century in the limelight. With her memoir’s remarkable debut, Spears has cemented her place as a successful author, adding to her long list of accomplishments.
