The former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski recently retired as one of the dominant forces in the history of the NFL. The veteran had amassed enough wealth throughout his career in the form of salary bonuses and his contract deals, but it turns out Gronk never touched a single penny from his salaries and NFL earnings. While most players splurge their money on luxuries, the 33-year-old was busy saving money for his post-retirement life.
The Arizona product played for a total of 11 seasons in the league. Nine with the Patriots and the remaining two with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. During this entire period, he earned nearly $70 million, including salary and all the unlocked bonuses. But guess what, he never touched it.
All the time, he was living on the money that he earned through brand endorsements, media, and similar deals. Some of his deals included brands like Dunkin’ Donuts, Visa, T-Mobile, Lyft, Cheerios, Monster Energy Drink, Tide, and a popular commercial with USAA.
This offseason, he was also engaged in anchoring for a kids’ show. His daily expenses were carried out through such earnings. It doesn’t imply that he is a miser, but he maintained financial discipline because of his future being football.
Back in 2019, when he announced his retirement from the Patriots, Gronk emphasized this agenda of spending the money. He said that he had seen various instances where it takes only a flash of a second to wipe out. Looking back, he claims to be confident about having enough wealth to steer him in the next phase of life.
“The way I played it, I feel like I’m in a totally safe spot, which is great,” Gronkowski said. “I’ve seen other players, you know, not be in a safe spot after they’re done playing, and [they] go and spend it all. It’s just great to have that feeling and to have that security that I can go out there trying new adventures [and] put all of my marbles on it, but know I’m still safe in the back end,” he added.
Rob Gronkowski departs from the field
Gronk always played a prime role in Tom Brady’s chase for a Super Bowl title. Whether it was with the Patriots or the Buccaneers, Gronkowski was always by his side. He has four Super Bowl titles and five Pro Bowl selections to his name.
He ranks third in NFL history with 92 career receiving touchdowns behind Antonio Gates’ 116 and Tony Gonzalez’s 111. Taking to social media, he thanked all the Buccaneers’ management for the ride and for trusting him throughout the journey.
“The friendships and relationships I have made will last forever, and I appreciate every single one of my teammates and coaches for giving everything they had as well,” he wrote in his post. The veteran proves he is not only a smart athlete on the football field but is also a genius when it comes to financial management.
