Tom Brady vs. Patrick Mahomes, by the numbers: A look inside their career stats ahead of Super Bowl rematch

After Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs to a Super Bowl win in 2020, it wasn’t unreasonable to think he was taking up Tom Brady’s torch. He already had an NFL MVP under his belt and the Chiefs looked like a juggernaut.

A year later, however, Brady snatched his torch right back after leaving the Patriots for the Buccaneers, with Tampa Bay dominating Kansas City 31-9 in Super Bowl 55. The quarterbacks’ stats couldn’t have looked more different. Mahomes threw 49 passes, completing 26, for 270 yards and a pair of interceptions; Brady passed 29 times, completing 21, for 201 yards and three touchdowns.

While the Buccaneers’ defense won the day, it was still a fascinating matchup between old and new.

Brady is likely taking one last ride this year at age 45. Mahomes, 27, still has a lot of career left. How do their careers stack up against each other? The Sporting News looks at the numbers.

Patrick Mahomes vs. Tom Brady, by the numbers

Brady dominates Mahomes in counting stats, naturally, thanks to 23 years of NFL experience vs. six. But Mahomes holds his own in terms of averages.

Mahomes is, by far, the leader in yards per game in NFL history with 300.7. Drew Brees is second at 280. Brady is eighth at 265.4. Mahomes also averages 30.2 touchdowns per season to Brady’s 28.4.

Yes, Brady’s trophy case is a lot more filled out. Mahomes has the 2018 MVP; Brady has been voted MVP three times (2007, 2010 and 2017). Brady and the Patriots disrupted league parity by winning six Super Bowls (and appearing in nine) over two decades. Brady then claimed a seventh title with the Buccaneers, giving him two more than Charles Haley. Mahomes has just the one.

There are some things numbers can’t convey, like Mahomes’ magic on the field, but the reality is this: He has a long way to go before he can have a seat at Brady’s table.

Still, Mahomes does have a statistical edge in places.

Mahomes holds his own game by game, but he is even more impressive in the postseason. Sample sizes are skewed – Brady has played in 47 playoff games to Mahomes’ 11. But Mahomes has been excellent in the postseason despite the Chiefs coming up short recently.

More goes into the playoffs than pure numbers, of course, but Mahomes’ brilliance can’t be denied.

It’s premature to say. Any number of things could happen to an NFL player.

If Mahomes plays until he is 39 and continues to put up numbers at the pace he’s putting them up, he would finish with 74,852 passing yards, 604 touchdowns and 144 interceptions. Given Mahomes’ playing style, it’s unreasonable to think he’ll challenge Brady’s longevity.

Speaking of that longevity, it’s a testament to Brady’s that, even with that lengthy career outlook, Mahomes still wouldn’t be challenging Brady’s all-time records.

The Chiefs’ main goal, naturally, is to win Super Bowls, not inflate Mahomes’ counting stats. But if there’s one thing to take away from this comparison, it’s that Brady’s longevity is nothing short of remarkable and deserves praise, but the same goes for Mahomes’ early-career magic.

It’s easy to take these two players for granted. It will be impossible to do so with them sharing the field for a sixth time Sunday night.
