Odell Beckham Jr was responsible for the ‘greatest catch of all time’, fined for Donald Trump ‘dog’ celebration and slapped a police officer’s buttocks ahead of his first Super Bowl appearance in Rams vs Bengals

Odell Beckham Jr is no stranger to making headlines around the world.

The 29-year-old thrives in the spotlight and there can be no greater stage for him to strut his stuff than during his first appearance in the Super Bowl this Sunday.

OBJ, who is one of the most talented wide receivers in the NFL, was visibly emotional as he helped the Los Angeles Rams book their spot in the California showdown by beating the San Francisco 49ers.

“This is everything,” Beckham said following the 20-17 win in the NFC Championship Game.

“This is everything. You know, I’ve been through a lot. I prayed up. I stay prayed up and God came through. So, just gotta enjoy the moment.”

Beckham Jr has been an inspired pickup by the Rams after being released by the Cleveland Browns in November.

The American certainly had a point to prove as he looked to resurrect his career after a turbulent few years.

Beckham Jr became the league’s highest-paid wide receiver in 2018 when he signed a new contract with the New York Giants.

However the team traded him to the Cleveland Browns seven months later where OBJ then struggled with a series of lengthy injuries.

It was a far cry from the man who won NFL Rookie of the Year honours in 2014.

The former LSU star broke several records but it was his famous one-handed touchdown backwards catch that first put him in the headlines.

Beckham showcased his talent during a 2014 clash against the Dallas Cowboys and Cris Collinsworth gushed on commentary duties that night.

He told NBC: “Put that to music! That is absolutely impossible what he just did! That may be the greatest catch I’ve ever seen in my life!”

During the following years, Beckham earned three Pro Bowl selections in his five years with the Giants.

He also became the fastest player in NFL history to reach both 200 career receptions and 4,000 career receiving yards.

But Beckham’s enigmatic personality has also had him in the headlines for other reasons as well.

In 2015, OBJ was suspended for one game for delivering helmet-to-helmet hit on Josh Norman after allowing their individual rivalry to boil over.

Two years later came the infamous boat photo where he joined a group of Giants receivers to party in Miami with Justin Bieber before ending the trip on a boat with Trey Songz six days before a playoff game – which they later lost.

Another nine months passed before OBJ was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct and later fined for simulating urinating like a dog after former US President Donald Trump called protesting NFL players ‘sons of b******.’

In 2020, Beckham faced a battery charge after a video emerged of him slapping a police officer’s buttocks but the arrest warrant was later rescinded.

OBJ’s career now seems back on track and after the Rams’ win in the NFC Championship, Head Coach Sean McVay was quick to compliment his star.

“He’s such a special player, so smart, so talented, so gifted. And he’s brought such a charisma and presence and really a swag to our team,” said McVay.

Eyes will once again be on Beckham during his first Super Bowl but the man himself hasn’t gotten any satisfaction out of proving people wrong.

He said: “A younger me would have… I don’t take satisfaction, it’s not that deep for me because I know who I am.”
