Patrick Mahomes in High School

Patrick Mahomes’ football career first started while he was in Whitehouse High School in Whitehouse, Texas. At that time, Mahomes was not only playing football, but he also had an interest in baseball and basketball. His father, Pat Mahomes is a former MLB pitcher so it is not difficult to see where Patrick has gotten his talent and ability from. In his senior year, he performed admirably both as a quarterback and as a pitcher. His football stats read 4,619 passing yards, 50 passing touchdowns, 948 rushing yards, and 15 rushing touchdowns over the course of the year. In baseball, he pitched a no-hitter game in which he struck players out 16 times. Naturally, he was rated as a three-star recruit by Rivals.com and selected to attend Texas Tech as his college.

Patrick Mahomes in College

As one of the top recruits in the country after high school, Patrick Mahomes decided to attend Texas Tech University and play for the Red Raiders football team. He got a chance to play for the team as a starter in his freshman year since their starter got injured. Playing in seven games in all, Mahomes managed 1,547 yards with 16 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. He set a Big 12 freshman record in a game against Baylor as he threw for 598 yards which was highlighted by touchdowns and just one interception. As a freshman at Texas Tech, Mahomes continued playing baseball as a relief pitcher.

Entering his sophomore year, Mahomes became the starting quarterback at Texas Tech and had some outstanding performances despite the team going 7-6 on the year. As for the two time Super Bowl Champion, he passed for over 350 yards in ten games, and over 400 yards in four of them. Furthermore, he also had eight games where he passed for at least 3 touchdowns. By the time the year ended, he was the Big 12 leader in passes completed with 364 out of 573 attempts. As for baseball, it was taking a back seat as he played in only three games with very little to do.

Before the start of his junior year, Mahomes decided to quit baseball so he could concentrate all of his efforts on playing football. On the turf, the two time NFL MVP had a season of a lifetime, particularly in September when he threw 18 touchdowns and rushed for another four. He had a monstrous game against Oklahoma which was a score fest as Texas Tech lost 66-59 against Baker Mayfield’s Sooners. Mahomes broke the NCAA FBS record for a single game with 819 total offensive yards and tied the single-game passing yards record with 734. At the end of his junior year, Mahomes received the Sammy Baugh Trophy which is given to the top college passer in the country on an annual basis.
