Which LIV Golf Players Have Qualified For The Masters?

After confirmation that Augusta National will allow LIV Golfers to compete in The Masters, attention turned to which of them would be eligible.

There are 18 LIV Golf players in the 2023 tournament, but how has, say, Kevin Na qualified while former World No.1 Lee Westwood hasn’t? How come Mito Pereira is in the field but there’s no room for Paul Casey?

There are 19 ways to qualify for the tournament, and some offer more security than others. That means certain LIV Golf players were merely awaiting confirmation they could play to begin looking ahead, while for others, their qualification was a more nip-and-tuck affair.

The most reliable way to qualify is as a former Masters champion. Doing that guarantees a place in the field for life, and six LIV Golf players qualify under that criteria – Phil Mickelson, Charl Schwartzel, Bubba Watson, Sergio Garcia, Patrick Reed and Dustin Johnson.

Beyond those, another six, Abraham Ancer, Jason Kokrak, Kevin Na, Louis Oosthuizen, Thomas Pieters and Harold Varner III have qualified because they were each in the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking at the end of 2022.

In Oosthuizen’s case, that was particularly touch and go. He secured a last-gasp Masters invite thanks to a tie for 7th in the Alfred Dunhill Championship on the DP World Tour a couple of weeks before that deadline.

As for three more, in Bryson DeChambeau’s case he knew that, all things being equal, he could compete this year as far back as 2020. That’s because after his final putt dropped in that year’s US Open to hand him his first Major, it also secured him an exemption to The Masters for the next five years.

It’s a similar story for Brooks Koepka. The American’s most recent of four Major wins, the 2019 PGA Championship, means he plays this year thanks to a similar exemption awarded to winners of the tournament. Likewise, Cameron Smith’s win in the 150th Open last year guarantees his place for the next five years.

That leaves just Mito Pereira, Joaquin Neimann and Talor Gooch. In Pereira’s case, despite an agonising end to last year’s PGA Championship when he finished third after having the title within his grasp, the achievement at least offered him a route to The Masters as he finished in the top four. Finally, Gooch and Niemann reached last year’s Tour Championship, which was enough to ensure their qualification.

Below is the full list of LIV Golf players eligible for next year’s Masters.
