The DP World Tour stops off in County Kildare this week for the Irish Open and it promises to be another enthralling contest as the star-studded field battles it out at The K Club.

It will be the second time that the tournament has been played at this venue. Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy claimed a three-shot victory in 2016.

The Arnold Palmer-designed North Course has plenty of history. It was the scene of the Smurfit European Open from 1995 to 2003 and again in 2005, and also where Europe recorded a thumping Ryder Cup victory over the US in 2006.

McIlroy is the 7/2 favourite to claim the spoils, ahead of Tyrrell Hatton (10/1) and Shane Lowry (20/1), who has a point to prove after being criticised for receiving one of Luke Donald’s six captain’s picks for the Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf Club.

Australian pair Min Woo Lee and Adam Scott are both priced at 20/1, while Poland’s Adrian Meronk, unlucky not to be chosen for the Europe-US event in Rome, is 25/1 to land his second win of the year.

Dane to enjoy Irish trip

After a couple of tough years on and off the course, Thorbjorn Olesen has started to rediscover his best form over the past 18 months and he landed the British Masters at The Belfry in May last year.

The Danish star added a seventh DP World Tour title to his collection in February this year at the Thailand Classic, finishing a comfortable four strokes ahead of German Yannik Paul, and he has had three top-fives and four top-10s in addition to that win this season.

The K Club course demands a strong tee-to-green game, as does The Belfry, and Olesen has been performing well in these departments on the DPWT this season.

He is seventh in strokes gained:tee-to-green, 14th in greens in regulation and third in strokes gained:total, while he has also been in good touch on the greens as he ranks 10th in putts per GIR and 15th in SG:putting.

Add in that Olesen was also 10th here in 2016 and all the signs are pointing to another positive showing.

Tip: Outright winner – Thorbjorn Olesen @ 55/1 with bet365

Accurate Englishman to be in the mix

Another solid tee-to-green player is Jordan Smith and if there is any improvement with the putter, which has been cold this season, he is capable of challenging.

The Englishman is unrivalled in greens in regulation this campaign, while he is third in SG:tee-to-green and 10th in driving accuracy, so there are no concerns with his long game.

It is the problems on the green that have stopped the 30-year-old adding to his two DP World Tour titles, but there have been signs of revival with the putter after a T12 at the Scottish Open and a T20 at the European Masters.

Tip: Outright winner – Jordan Smith @ 35/1 with bet365

Refreshed German to make his mark

Rounding off the selections is Maximilian Kieffer and, like Olesen and Smith, he fits the bill of being solid from tee to green and may have been overlooked in the market at 90/1.

The German has dropped off over his previous four starts, with a missed cut on his D+D Real Czech Masters defence a disappointment, but he was not playing in Switzerland last week and that break should have done him the world of good.

A return to The K Club, where he was fifth in 2016, could be exactly what is required to spark the 33-year-old into life and get him back into the winner’s circle.

Kieffer is an accurate driver and is 21st in SG:tee-to-green, while his ranking of 14th in par-five scoring is also a positive given that there are four to go at on this course.

Tip: Outright winner – Maximilian Kieffer @ 90/1 with bet365
